Harold L. Yager

Harold L. Yager, 98, passed away unexpectedly at his home on August 12, 2016. He was born on March 8, 1918 in Sauquoit to the late Alfred and Mildred Lewis Yager and received his education in Sauquoit schools.
On October 19, 1940 he was united in marriage with Betty Champ in the Paris Hill Congregational Church, a loving union of 54 years until her death on February 22, 1995.
Harold worked for 32 years at the Clayville paper mill as a foreman and prior to his retirement worked as a machinist at Dunlop in Utica.
He was an avid hunter and as a younger man enjoyed the times spent hunting both big and small game.
Harold also built his own camp on Twitchell Lake where he had to ferry in all of the supplies by boat.
He epitomized the definition of a true loving family man who could often be seen at any event his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were involved in.
Harold was a longtime member of Sauquoit Lodge 150 F&AM.
Surviving him are his three daughters and son in law; Evelyn and Robert Newby, Lynn Kelley and Betty Jane Reese, his two brothers and sister in law; Ernest and Mary Yager and Howard Yager, his sister; Gertrude Charbonneau, a special aunt; Ruth Lewis, his sister in law; Evelyn Mead, his son in law; Francis Kitchen, 7 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, 7 great-great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephew, with special mention of his grandson Harold Kitchen who was an immense help over the years in tending to his grandfather’s needs.
He was predeceased by his daughter; Dorothy Kitchen and his brother; Lynn.
Harold’s life will be celebrated on Friday, August 19 at 12:00 at the Smith Funeral Home, 3022 Oneida St. Sauquoit with his nephew; Rev. Alan Mead officiating. Interment will be in Crown Hill Memorial Park.
