Maureen Jane Collins 1945-2017 Rochester
Maureen Jane Collins, a longtime resident of Rochester, NY passed away on April 2, 2017, after an extensive and brave battle with pancreatic cancer. Maureen was born on May 6, 1945 to James F. and Mary T. (Bassett) Collins in Utica, NY. She was the third daughter and fifth child of eight children. Maureen graduated from Chadwicks High school in 1963 and received a B.S. degree in Elementary Education from the State University of New York at Oneonta in 1967. She was a beloved elementary school teacher in the Churchville Chili School District where she spent her entire career and retired in 2000. Her passion for teaching impacted the lives of many of her students.
Maureen is survived by family members: Mary Lou Serth and husband Jack; Gloria Collins; Patricia Sayward and husband Ralph; Kathleen Dudley and husband Wayne; Cynthia DeSantos and husband Paul; Ed Collins and wife Candace; Kevin Collins; Barbara Giguere and husband William. She is also survived by her aunt Mary Stricker, many cousins, nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. Her close friends Judy Schimp and Emma Maher will miss her dearly.
Maureen is predeceased by her parents, her brothers Jim and Chuck, and her nephew Ray Collins.
Maureen was often found holding a baby or playing games with the children of the family. Her love for children of all ages kept her young at heart and made us all feel young again. She took a keen interest in the lives of those around her, and with her sense of humor and adventurous spirit, made everyone feel loved. “The ones that love us never really leave us.”
Maureen wished to express her deep love and appreciation to family and friends for their love, kindness, friendship and support over the years and especially in her final days.
Calling hours will be from 4 - 7 p.m. on Friday, April 7 th at the Smith Funeral Home, 3022 Oneida St., Sauquoit. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, April 8th at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick’s - St. Anthony’s, 3364 Oneida St. Chadwicks, NY. Interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery at the family's convenience. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Pines of Peace, 2378 Ridge Road, Ontario, NY 14519.
