Joseph A. Meeker (“Papa Meek”), 59, passed away unexpectedly on September 13, 2016 in the comfort of his home. He was born on July 11, 1957 in Utica to the late Isabelle (Nasto) Meeker. Joe was a 1977 graduate of Proctor High School and subsequently entered the U.S. Army where he served proudly as a Spec 4 Mech V Corp. Joe furthered his education at M.V.C.C. where he earned his degree in Recreational Therapy.
For over 20 years, Joe worked as a Recreational Therapist for the Resource Center for Independent Living where he gained his second family.
Joe was an Honorary Member of the Willowvale Volunteer Fire Department where he proudly served for many years as a Volunteer Fireman.
He loved to cook and bake, testing his new concoctions on family and friends. Joe was an avid fisherman, enjoying the many peaceful times spent on the water.
His greatest enjoyment, though, came from the time he spent with his family. Whether doing wood projects with his grandchildren, dancing with his daughters or at the many family gatherings. He was also a die-hard New York Jets fan and looked forward to the upcoming season.
Joe is survived by his two daughters: Jessica Meeker and Frank Mendoza of Rome, Jillian and Leon Saville of Whitesboro, his grandchildren: Travis Leitz and Julianna Saville, his sisters: Theresa and James Murray of Ilion and Anna Kohl and Ray Camarata of Vernon, his brother: Donald J. and Susan Meeker of Mohawk, his nieces and nephews: Erica Price, John Price, Amanda Meeker, Sara Meeker, Melissa Moschetto, Nyssa Kohl, David Colon and Alex Colon, his great-niece: Isabella Meeker, Jessica and Jillian’s mother: Jodi Wisnoski and many aunts, uncles, cousins, neighbors and lifelong friends with special mention of Sandy Cole and Valentino (Uncle “Tino”) Roundhead.
Joe was also a lover of dogs and leaves his “fur daughter” Munchkin and his other canine family members; Jada, Lucy, Chico, Oakley and Scooby.
He was predeceased by his dear friend; Sheila Ambrose, his mother, Isabelle (Nasto) Meeker, his “adopted” parents; Stan and Joyce Markowski, who were a positive influence in Joe’s life growing up, and his nephew Candido Noti.
Joe’s funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 17 at 3:00 at the Smith Funeral Home, 3022 Oneida St. Sauquoit. His family will receive visitors from 1:00 until the time of the service.
A heartfelt thank-you is extended to Joe’s neighbors, Edwards Ambulance, the Willowvale Volunteer Fire Department, the New Hartford Police Department and Dr. Sikder and his staff for all of their care and assistance.
In Joe’s memory, please consider donations to Believe 271, P.O. Box 480, Barneveld, NY 13304. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
